4 Hannan students placed- Honorable Mention- in the State of Georgia for the Ready Kids Competition! Jackson Phillips, Maeleah Sneed, Blake Hatch, Sherman Fuller, and Jakayla McBroom all created a fabulous PSA on how to stay safe during natural disasters.

Congratulations to Steve Smith and Vivian Mooney for representing Hannan at on the Literacy Alliance's annual It's All About Words canvas project! . On Tuesday, November 8th at 5:00pm, there will be a reception held for all of the participating artists at the Columbus Public Library on Macon Road. See the Hannan Art page for more details!

About the Magnet

Program Overview-The curriculum for the "Program for Gifted and High Achieving Students" is anchored in the Georgia Performance Standards. However, realizing that meeting minimum competency in the GPS is not sufficient for able students, the curriculum has been differentiated to meet the needs of these students. The curriculum also meets the standards of the content area' National Standards Projects as well as the National Curriculum Standards for Gifted Education. The curriculum has been developed to provide both more rigor and complexity than is provided by the "regular" curriculum.While teachers will use adopted textbooks as guides, supplementary units and resources have been selected that better meet interests and academic needs of talented learners. These resources are the Integrated Curriculum Model (VanTassel-Baska, 2003) designed for gifted learners. This model is comprised of three interrelated dimensions that are responsive to different aspects of the gifted learner. These dimensions:1) Emphasize advanced content knowledge that frames disciplines of study2) Provide for higher level thinking and processing3) focus learning experiences around major issues, themes, and ideas that define both real-world applications and theoretical modeling within and across areas of studyInstructional resources used to teach the curriculum also demonstrate the use of key design features of curricular reform advocated by the National Standards Project. Thus, the curriculum for the Hannan Academy Program for Gifted and High Achieving Students employs the following emphases: - meaning-based- higher order thinking and reasoning- intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary connections-metacognition- habits of the mind- inquiry-based learning and problem-solving- new technologies as tools for the learning process- learner outcomes of significance- authentic assessment- multicultural and global concerns- multiple resources and materials- substantive contentThe curriculum is made more effective for gifted learners by ensuring these additional emphases:- provisions for accelration and compacting of content- advanced reading level of materials employed- opportunites for students to developed advanced products and- opportunites for independent learning based on student capacity and interestImplementation of curriculum for the Hannan Magnet Academy Program for Gifted and High Achieving Students addresses the specific characteristics of talented learners and provides a flexible and supportive environment for learning.

Gifted Resources

How are gifted students served?State identified gifted students at Hannan Academy are served in a state approved model of instruction- the cluster model. Teachers of gifted students in the magnet program hold the state add-on certification in gifted education. Gifted students receive 10 hours of services, the maximum allowed by Georgia for programs using the cluster model. Each student has a contract which outlines how his/her strengths and interests will be addressed through core content areas through differentiation. In addition, all magnet students receive 30 minutes of Spanish instruction daily from Spanish certified teachers. However, the entire curriculum is differentiated to meet the needs of gifted and high-achieving students. Thus, the needs of gifted learners are being addressed continually throughout each school day.How are gifted students different from their classmates?Many gifted children learn to read early, with better comprehension of the nuances of language. As much as half the gifted and talented population has learned to read before entering school. Gifted children often read widely, quickly, and intensely and have large vocabularies. Gifted children commonly learn basic skills better, more quickly, and with less practice. They are better able to construct and handle abstractions. They often pick up and interpret nonverbal cues and can draw inferences that other children need to have spelled out for them. They take less for granted, seeking the "hows" and "whys." They can work independently at an earlier age and can concentrate for longer periods. Their interests are both wildly eclectic and intensely focused. They often have seemingly boundless energy, which sometimes leads to a misdiagnosis of hyperactivity. They usually respond and relate well to parents, teachers, and other adults. They may prefer the company of older children and adults to that of their peers. They like to learn new things, are willing to examine the unusual, and are highly inquisitive. They tackle tasks and problems in a well-organized, goal-directed, and efficient manner. They exhibit an intrinsic motivation to learn, find out, or explore and are often very persistent.
